Moving to Union County? How to Verify School Assignments Before You Buy

One of the most common questions I get from families relocating to the Charlotte area is about Union County schools. And for good reason — Union County Public Schools is consistently ranked as one of the highest-performing school districts in the Charlotte metro, and school quality is a major factor in where families choose to buy.

But there's something important that every buyer needs to understand before they make an offer in Union County: school assignments are based on your specific home address, not the neighborhood name or what the listing description says.

Why This Matters

Real estate listings often mention school assignments as a selling point. "Assigned to Weddington High School." "Waxhaw Elementary district." These are accurate at the time of listing — but they're not guaranteed.

School boundaries in Union County can and do change. The district adjusts attendance zones periodically to manage enrollment, accommodate new schools, and respond to growth. A home that was assigned to one school last year may be assigned to a different school this year.

More importantly: the school assignment for a home is tied to the specific address, not the neighborhood name. Two homes in the same subdivision — even on the same street — can sometimes be assigned to different schools if a boundary line runs between them.

How to Verify Before You Buy

The right way to verify school assignments is to go directly to the source.

Union County Public Schools maintains an online school locator tool. You can enter a specific address and see the currently assigned elementary, middle, and high school for that address. This is the most reliable method, and it's the one I recommend to every buyer I work with in Union County.

Visit UnionCountyNCSchools.com for school resources and the address lookup tool.

Call the district directly if you have questions. The UCPS enrollment office can confirm assignments and let you know if any boundary changes are planned for the coming year. This is especially worth doing if you're buying in an area that's experienced significant growth — new schools sometimes trigger boundary adjustments.

Don't rely on the listing description alone. I've seen listings with outdated school information — not because anyone was being dishonest, but because the information was accurate when the listing was prepared and has since changed. Always verify independently.

What to Do If the Assignment Isn't What You Expected

If you verify the school assignment and it's not what you were hoping for, you have a few options.

Look at nearby homes. Sometimes moving a few streets over puts you in a different attendance zone. I can help you identify homes that are assigned to your preferred school.

Understand the magnet and choice options. Union County has magnet programs and school choice options that may give your child access to schools outside their assigned zone. The district's website has information on these programs.

Consider the full picture. Union County's schools are strong across the board — not just at the most sought-after campuses. If your assigned school isn't the one you had in mind, it's worth researching it directly before ruling it out.

A Note on Timing

If you're relocating from out of state and planning to start your child in school mid-year, the enrollment timeline matters. I'd encourage you to reach out to the district early — before you've closed on a home — to understand the enrollment process and what documentation you'll need.

Getting ahead of this avoids a scramble at the end of a transaction that's already demanding a lot of your attention.
